Abstract
Pajakatu slopes down into a small, sheltered inlet. Three boats are stretched out there; perhaps they are taking a day off, or maybe they have already retired. At ten in the morning the estuary is still, a mirror of the sky, green and smoke-blue, like a shared dream. I climb aboard my vessel and begin to drift. The shoreline profile is gently sloping, sculpted by ice, and the water that surrounds Pikisaari and makes it an island is the colour of weak tea. For a long stretch it is very shallow, so that the light filtering through the water reaches the bottom quickly.
