Abstrakti
Muinaisiranilaisesta Mithra-jumaluudesta tiedetään suhteellisen vähän alkuperäisten aikalaistekstien ja kuvallisen tiedon puuttuessa. Iranilaisille jumaluus oli abstrakti asia, josta ei tehty kuvia. Antiikin ajalta on kuitenkin säilynyt kreikkalaisten sekä roomalaisten kirjoittamia huomioita ja olettamuksia Mithrasta. Länsimaisten nykytutkijoiden kiinnostus Mithraan johtuu paljolti Mithras-kultista, joka levisi nopeasti ajanlaskun ensivuosisatoina Rooman valtakunnassa. Tutkijat ovat kultin symbolien, rituaalien ja merkityksien ohella pohtineet sitä missä määrin Mithra vaikutti Mithras-kultin syntyyn. Viime vuosikymmenten arkeologiset kaivaukset ovat huomattavasti lisänneet tietoa Mithras-mysteeristä ja rituaaleista. Ympäri Eurooppaa on löytynyt Mithrasin kulttipaikkoja (mithraeum). Sen sijaan iranilaisesta Mithrasta materiaalisia merkkejä on toistaiseksi löytynyt niukasti. Useita kohteita on kuitenkin ehdotettu mahdollisiksi Mithran paikoiksi (mehrkadeh).
Artikkelissani selvittelen Mithran jättämiä jälkiä Iranin arkeologiseen aineistoon sekä tarkastelen Mithran mahdollista vaikutusta Mithras-kultin syntyyn. Tutkimuskirjallisuuden ja arkeologisten tutkimusten perusteella – eriävistä mielipiteistä huolimatta - vaikuttaa vahvasti siltä, että roomalaisen Mithras-kultin alkulähde oli muinaisiranilaisen Mithran maailmassa. Matkalla länteen usko muokkautui ja kotouduttuaan Roomaan kehittyi roomalaiseksi Mithras-kultiksi.
